In Chemical Graph Theory, several degree based topological indices were introduced and studied since 1972. In this paper, a novel invariant is considered, which is the Nirmala index defined as the sum of the square root of sum of the degrees of the pairs of adjacent vertices. We initiate a study of the Nirmla index.
